Why Structure Matters
In Writing Task 1 for formal letters, clear structure is essential. It shows examiners that you can communicate politely and professionally.
1 Greeting and Opening

- Dear Mr Smith / Ms Jones
- Start with a polite introduction explaining why you are writing
Tip: Always match your greeting with the formality of the situation.
2 Body of the Letter
- Use one paragraph for each main point
- Be clear and concise
- Use polite and professional phrases such as "I would be grateful if" or "I am writing to request"
- Include details or examples to support your points
Tip: Keep your tone formal but friendly, avoid slang or overly casual words.
3 Closing and Sign Off
- Use phrases like "Yours faithfully" if you don't know the name
- "Yours sincerely" if you know the name
